It's Men vs. Women in the Workplace

In 1999 Lilly Ledbetter sued Goodyear, where she worked as a supervisor for nearly two decades. It turns out that during her tenure she was paid 15-40 percent less than her male coworkers who held similar positions there. Perhaps not so surprising is that this week, the Supreme Court ruled in Goodyear's favor. According to the decision, employees must present evidence of a "discrete act of discrimination" that took place not more than 180 days before a suit is filed. (i.e. Ledbetter's evidence was too old.) Dissenter Ruth Bader Ginsburg said:
Initially, you may not know that men are receiving more for substantially similar work. And, under Monday's ruling, by the time a female worker learns it, it will be too late to sue.
If you're suffering from job bias because of your gender--or sexual orientation for that matter--if you don't take action now, it may be too late.

wayward whale's deadbeat dad discovered

Not since Humphrey the whale made his debut in 1985, has a humpback dominated the nation's hearts and news waves. Now a new generation has their own wayward whales to claim, Delta and Dawn, the wounded mother/son whale duo who triumphantly returned to the ocean after being stuck in the Sacramento Delta.

Despite constant news coverage, there was one issue at hand that no-one dared to address until NOW: deadbeat whale dads.

So, we at the NSRC, hired an investigative reporter to see where Dawn's baby daddy was during this horrible ordeal and were shocked by what they found:

WARNING: disturbing photo below:

Has he no shame!

Behind the Rainbow Curtain

This weekend, 31 people were arrested in Moscow while protesting the Mayor's decision to outlaw the first annual Gay Pride parade. The images fed over the international wire were shocking enough but the hate-filled sentiment behind the decision smacks of a frighteningly repressive legacy...

Below is a short interview I conducted with my colleague Ruslan, who moved to the States from Russia in 2000. He gives a little insight into the situation in Russia:

Q: Was the decriminalization of homosexuality in Russia in 1993, met with popular support?

A: In 1993 people were dying from hunger. Homosexuality was the last thing on people’s minds. A lot of laws were passed; this was the least noticed one.

Q: Has the violence against minorities surged since the fall of the Iron Curtain?

A: The freedom of speech was taken to an extreme. After all, bashing someone over the head is a statement of sorts. Also these freedoms were not spread uniformly. In conformity with ages-old tradition, we had weighted-distribution of rights. The stronger (richer, bigger gun) one is, the more human rights one can get.

Q: How were LGBT people treated under Communism?

A: There were no out LGBT people in the USSR. In the 30s, 40s, and 50s they were shot. In the 60s and 70s they were sent to Siberia. In the 80’s they were encouraged to leave to the morally-degraded and bankrupt West.

Below are quotes translated by Ruslan from an article published in the Rambler:

Vice-Speaker of the Russian Parliament led a protest against the failed gay parade. His party wants to defend “traditional way of life of Christian Russia.” He accused “russo-phobes” of starting the homosexuality movement in Russia, and included Russian ministers of Culture and Education onto the list of russo-phobes. He suggested that all Gays and Lesbians should be forecefully cured or otherwise be placed under indefinite house arrest.

His official banners said “Russia Without Faggots” and “Sodomites are Not for Russia”. These banners were topped with flags of the Russian Orthodox Church. The organizers called for “slavic brothers” to “clean Russia from this garbage.” “We will help Christians from London, Paris, Berlin to stop gay-parades in their cities.”

Moscow Mayor: “We have nothing against people with non-traditional orientation. In 1993 we passed a law that forbids persecution of such people. These people can get together in their own special clubs. But we are against homosexual propaganda. The same way as most societies are against alcohol or tobacco propaganda.”

There's also a great article by the BBC about homophobia in Russia.

Pam Anderson tells her kids about sex tape

I've always admired Pamela Anderson for her stand against animal cruelty. It seems now she's keeping it real when it comes to talking to her kids about sex. Apparently, her two boys wanted to watch Borat, so she sat them down first to explain that tape she made with ex-Tommy Lee. Kudos to Pam.

Another viewpoint on being plus-size and sexy

The following was promoted from the comments on Anna's 'Size, the final frontier' post last week. The writer, identified as Penny in the comments, wrote a thoughtful and funny comment that we thought worthy of a repost. Keep those comments coming, folks, and maybe YOU can be next. Thanks again, Penny!

As through as I am with the "thin is in" movement, I can't really get down with thick being the fashionable new black. The fact is that this tabu secret of sexual attraction is part healthiness, part confidence, and part good sense of humor. The remaining 95% is humanity.

We need to check ourselves. We have already wrecked ourselves. We need to step off from this creepy shallow preconception of who we are. It's a wicked scheme inflicted through manipulative social engineering resultant of the intrusive overbearing impulses predicated on the dementia experienced by the undernourished, chemically dependent, bipolar fashion editor in Prada shoes and a retro Thierry Mugler dress. It should have been obvious that this poor man had some issues. Instead, since the Ike Administration in the 1950's, America has allowed this same idiot, who places these absurd social mines in the already outrageous cultural minefields of mass acceptance, to also initiate tearse healing and fraudulent restoration at the close of every fashion fad's season. And, that's just stupid on a level I don't have enough space here to go off on.

We are most attractive to others when they see that we are the best at being ourselves. So , why have we just let go of all the most necessary attributes of character, personality, and wit that are far more important than our physical appearance? Tall, hungry, bottle blonde, and nakedly clad means nothing when it lacks the enticing ability to carry on a coherent conversation about the focuses of the day beyond Dancing with the Stars or American Idolatry. Fat ain't where it's at when all it knows is the direction to every restaurant in town. The day we come into the light of the truth that we are not our looks, the designer advertisements we wear so proudly, or any other ignorance we are told about ourselves in Cosmo, People, and O, the Nation will be SAVED!

What about being interesting, intelligent, funny, hell, even a damn smart-ass as a defense mechanism to covertly mask your otherwise coy shyness? Can we cook, work the grill at a picnic, tat a quit, give a great back massage, or whip a piano in a way that shames Jerry Lee Lewis? Are we into Tai Chi or damn good at the Electric Slide, especially when Frankie Bevery is being spun? What about being able to defend your love for your political party, Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Monkey, your favorite food court sushi bar, that downright nasty cherry licorice thong collection hidden under your family Bible in your sweater drawer, and the crush you had on your 4th grade music teacher? Can we please be more than cookie-cutter pretty?

As you've probably noticed, I am freaking sick and tired of living in an America obsessed with that deviantly illusive and irrationally impossible desire to remake the whole of humanity into a deranged definition of beauty poorly paraphrased by the likes of Paris Hilton on her grainy sex tape. What is more irritating is that, when we can't be Paris, we become so Baptist, repressive, and insanely critical of the part of us that makes us attractive one to another. We take it another step further by setting goals that no human being in the history of man was ever capable of achieving, a hell beset with standards no mortal can ever meet. We call this idiotic fantasy our perfect sexual encounter, because we are crazy. Okay? Straightjacket CRAZY!

Now, I am not into narcissism. That notwithstanding, a little compassionate humanity in the form of self love is in order here. There is nothing wrong with appreciating the person you are. When we can do this, we just might come to know, appreciate, and love someone else just as much, no matter what we all look like.

Fertility Rites

AP reports that archeologists in Greece have found thousands of clay pots and figurines at an ancient sanctuary.

According to the Culture Ministry, "The identity of the deities worshipped there is not yet clear, but it is certain that they were goddesses associated with plant growth and fertility."

Could be. But does woman = fertility? Would an archaeologist from the future look at Cosmo and Hustler and deduce they are relics from a 21st century fertility cult?

Maybe the ancient Greeks –kinky homoerotic vases notwithstanding –also liked looking naked ladies.

How Young is too Young?

As transgender identities become increasingly acceptable in North America, new issues are constantly being revisited, or for many, visited for the first time. The latest “dilemma” to hit national airwaves, newspapers and magazines is how parents of potentially transgender children, even toddlers, deal with this pseudo-new phenomenon. So how young is too young when it comes to supporting your child in their gender reassignment? Recent reports on the subject have shown children as young as four, and even two and a half, as being both vocal and certain of their transgender identities. And many parents are behind their children 100 percent in their transition. But is the right way to go? Is their a difference, and if so, how can you tell, between a four year old girl who prefers baseball and trucks and a four year old girl who wants to stand at the urinal? Are parents acting too soon? Or are they not acting soon enough?

STDs and The Bachelor

First of all, I don't watch The Bachelor, but for those of you who do, here's an interesting interview with the host of the show. Apparently, tests for STDs weed out 25-50% of the applicants. Not so surprising since more than half of all Americans contract an STD in their lifetime.

Here are some tips for STD prevention.

And one more thing...check out Katherine Frank's article The Bachelor: harem fantasies for mainstream audiences, which she wrote for American Sexuality magazine.

Vets and sex crimes

The Bureau of Justice Statistics just released a study showing that military veterans in prison are more than twice as likely to have been convicted for sex offenses as non-veteran inmates. Why? Well golly, they just don't know.

In another shocking study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2004, researchers concluded that at least 2 in every 10 returning soldiers reported suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Perhaps, more unsettling is that less than half reported seeking help.

Below is a definition of PTSD offered up by the National Institute of Mental Health:
"People with PTSD may startle easily, become emotionally numb (especially in relation to people with whom they used to be close), lose interest in things they used to enjoy, have trouble feeling affectionate, be irritable, become more aggressive, or even become violent."

I trust that these incarcerated vets are receiving comprehensive PTSD treatment...just like at good old Walter Reed Hospital

birds do it, bees do it, why can't we do it? safely, that is..

9 out of 10 people agree abstinence-only education DOES NOT WORK**. Ask researchers, scientists , and teenagers and they'll all tell you in their best 90's valley girl voice "like, get real! It's 2007. Everyone's doing it!" It, for you squares out there, being sex.

Finally even politicians are catching on, Democrats have recently committed to de-funding ineffective abstinence-only education here in the States. Now it seems like we may have a chance to apply some of that common sense to our foreign policy. And we all know that doesn't happen too often!

So, here's where we come in. Let's start harassing our local officials and urge them to pass the Protection Against Transmission of HIV for Women and Youth (PATHWAY) Act. It's a bill backed by both Democrats and Republicans that would remove ideological restrictions on HIV prevention policies, including the 1/3 abstinence-until-marriage prevention earmark, from U.S. global AIDS policy.

PEPFAR Watch has some great information on their site about PATHWAY, as well as a link to your local representatives email addresses. Click here to get to their site:

For us SF/Bay Area folks, I'd urge you to call Speaker Pelosi's office. Since Congress is in session a message may reach her more quickly if you call the DC office (202) 225-4965), you can also reach her at: (415) 556-4862.

The Mailman School of Public Health even came up with this handy phone script for those of us who get a little nervous:

Hello, my name is ________________I am a constituent and I am calling
to urge Speaker Pelosi to exercise leadership in making sure that
language striking the abstinence earmark for global AIDS prevention is
included in this year's base appropriations bill.

Rev. Jerry Falwell's Greatest Hits

Jerry Falwell, the founder of the Moral Majority and significant leader in the religious right, died today at 73 in his Liberty University office.

We thought that Falwell's passing would be an appropriate time to publish a list of his best known quotes. Source: PositiveAtheism.org.

  • “AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”
  • "It appears that America's anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men's movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening."
  • "If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being."
  • After the September 11 attacks Falwell said, “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen."
  • “Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions”
  • “[Homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven."

Digg this!

Size, the final frontier

Yes, my friends, I'm referring to Star Trek , the network TV phenomenom that legitimitazed man-scaping (was or was not Capt. Kirk one of the first metrosexuals around), promoted multi-species oogling and coopted a sacred Rabbinical hand gesture to create the oh so pervasive Vulcan Salute.

Back in the Star Trek days, Capt. Kirk was the empathetic Don Juan who was always getting the chicks while Spock was the John to his Ponch, someone struggling to understand the complexities of humans and khans, alike. A gentle yet asexual Vulcan wracked with angst, seemingly oblivious to the world of sexuality and sensuality.

Which is why it's kind of ironic that the cover of the Sunday New York Times fashion section (sadly not available in Vulcan) features Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, in an unlikely new role; ambassador for positive body image. Nimoy, an accomplished photographer, is making headlines, or at least one "Girth and Nudity, a Pictorial Mission" with a new exhibit featuring nude plus-sized women. To loyal Trekkies this mission may not seem as grandiose as a trip to planet Ardana but for many US women, it may prove just as impossible to reach.

In a country whose GDP in part depends on guilting women into thinking that there's something wrong with them, the size/fat acceptance movement is subversive but it's not new. There's fat acceptance organizations, plus size burlesque, online communities such as Dimensions Magazine revolutionary fat zines (the late 'I'm So Fucking Beautiful' by Nomy Lamm comes to mind) and more, all attempting to undo the misconception that being skinny is the bees knees. I'm personally psyched that Leonard Nimoy's joined the fold and brought this message to the front of the NYT.

So, Leonard, let me be the first to Vulcan salute you.

And to everyone one else, please rock out with your Spock out.

Gone down on more than six people in your life? Might as well be smoking two packs a day.

Not the sort to provoke any additional moral panic around fellatio and its sista-friend, cunnilingus (that’s Oprah’s corner of the market; school bus episode anyone?) but according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, there is conclusive evidence that human papillomavirus (HPV), transmitted via fellatio, causes some throat cancers in both men and women. Reporting in the May 10 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers found that oral HPV infection is the strongest risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer (located in the tonsils, back of the tongue, and throat), even stronger than tobacco and alcohol use. Having multiple oral sex partners (more than six) tops the list of sex practices that boost risk for the HPV-linked cancer, although mouth to mouth transmission remains possible and was not ruled out by the study. Taking into account that approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV in the US alone, and about 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year, these new findings might be cause for concern amongst the extra sexually generous.

According to recent statistics from the CDC, by age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. Stats for men are less clear; while most women are diagnosed with HPV on the basis of abnormal Pap tests which check for changes in the cervix, the cervixless are less likely to know if they’re carriers unless they develop one of the two (out of 30!) sexually transmitted strains that cause genital warts, the only visible symptom of the virus.

Maintaining its disheartening stance, the study points out that HPV-linked oral cancer has been on the rise since at least 1973, and is expected to beat out those caused by tobacco and alcohol use. Already accounting for 60 percent of oropharyngeal cancers and about a third of all oral cavity and pharynx cancers in the United States, there are more than 11,000 individuals currently kicking themselves for skipping that after sex smoke. Never mind the shot of Jack that got them there in the first place. So bring out your “inconspicuous” flask everyone already knows about and, what the hell, treat yourself to that carton you’ve been eyeing at Walgreen’s. After all, increasing your chances for oral cancer by two and a half or threefold (respectively) is nothing compared to the six plus oral sex partners you met over Spring Break. Yup, the same ones who, in a cruel twist of fate, made you 8.6 times more likely to lose a tongue.

Advertising across the pond...

In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) which is funded by a tax on the advertising industry, is responsible for fielding complaints against specific advertisements, and then ruling about whether or not the ad violates strict advertising codes. For someone who's interested in the way that advertising controls, and is controlled by, culture, this is fascinating stuff.

The ASA just released their Top Ten Most Controversial Advertisements list of 2006 -- the ads that got the most complaints. 3 of the 10 most controversial ads involved homosexual innuendo or kisses. This Dolce & Gabbana ad was the 10th most controversial ad of 2006, and involved two men kissing briefly. Check out the excerpt from the BBC article...

10. DOLCE & GABBANA - 89 COMPLAINTS

D&G ad

Something of a theme emerges here - with D&G and the politics of same-sex relations appearing three times each in the top 10. D&G's TV ad showed a brief kiss between two men, and was followed by complaints that it was unsuitable for children to see, and some that it was unsuitable to show at any time. The regulators decided that to be appropriate it was only necessary that the advert not be shown around programmed aimed specifically at children.

Complaints not upheld

While the ASA refused to take down the ad entirely, it did require that the ad not be shown on programming aimed specifically at children. I hope they also don't allow heterosexual kissing during children's programming. Otherwise, we teach kids that our gay brothers and sisters are outsiders and wierdos. Mainstreaming homosexuality needs to happen everywhere in our culture, including television advertising, before we can build a culture of acceptance and tolerance for all peoples.

On a less serious note, the complaints against Kellogg's are hilarious. Read on below... I ride my dog home everyday to get my Crunchy Nut!

8. KELLOGG'S - 96 COMPLAINTS

Kellogg's ad

Objections to a Kellogg's television ad featuring a man riding a dog (to get home in time to eat Crunchy Nut) claimed that it portrayed cruelty to animals and would encourage viewers to try the same stunt at home. Kellogg's responded that the ad was clearly surreal in nature, no dog was actually ridden during filming and that the advert wasn't being shown before the watershed, so children would not copy it. Viewers were also warned not to try it at home.

Complaints not upheld

Guliani and the lack of courage around sexual literacy

We've already written a bit at the American Sexuality blog about Guiliani's nascent bid for the White House, and the unfortunate ringer he's going to go through as the only sane Republican Presidential candidate on sexual literacy issues. Well, here comes the firing squad. This time, it's from the straight talk express himself John McCain. The quote...

"He's well outside the mainstream of rank-and-file Republicans on this issue, not only as someone who is pro-abortion, but someone who has supported one of the most radical pro-abortion groups in the country," John Weaver, the McCain strategist, said in a telephone interview.

There is so little courage amongst Republicans to stand up for commonsense ways to reduce rates of teen pregnancy or policies that allow doctors to do everything in their power to protect women's health. And as younger people start to vote, donate, and volunteer, it'll driving the Republican Party off the proverbial cliff. See the data table to below from this Pew Foundation report. It's the generation gap on homosexuality that catches my eye, and I think it can be extrapolated to other values' voters issues like abortion.

Portugal relaxes abortion restrictions

This is an unmitigated victory for abortion rights advocates and medical professionals in Portugal, one of the few socially conservative bastions left in Europe. An excerpt...

The old law, which was one of the most restrictive in Europe, only allowed abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy if the mother’s health was at risk and in cases of rape up to 16 weeks. The Portuguese government hopes that this new law will prevent dangerous illegal abortions, which have killed and seriously injured over 10,000 Portuguese women each year, CNN reports.

They should build a memorial to the women who died in illegal and dangerous abortion attempts. In ten years, that's 100,000 women who died.

Gay execs reaching 'pink' ceiling

Interestingly, business in the United States has been more progressive than the Churches, government, or schools in terms of accepting gays. Many companies offer partner benefits and have internal workplace discrimination policies that prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation -- and all in the name of recruiting the best talent for the company's profit. An interesting aside: it was government enforcing laws before business adopted them when it came to African American's rights.

But it's not all so rosy. Gay executives are running into a 'pink ceiling' as they reach the top echelons of the corporate structure. Malcolm Lazin had some great quotes in this Reuters' piece.

"There still is a pink ceiling for openly gay executives," said Malcolm Lazin, executive director of Equality Forum, a group that promotes civil rights for gays.

If they make it that far, it's important to keep their sexuality under wraps to avoid the distraction it might cause for the board and investors. But all that's changing with a new generation of out and fighting gay execs.

"What you are seeing, is the next generation is unwilling to live in the closet," Lazin said. "Those capable young executives will choose only to go to these places where they believe meritocracy prevails."

Gay Don't Pay on American Idol

Simon says that American Idol is a singing competition. But this year’s most entertaining moments have been the flirtatious bantering between Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell. During the earlier episodes it seemed as though they were in the midst of a good natured tiff – check out this clip:

Later, we had Ryan commenting on Simon’s unbuttoned shirt and standing oh so close behind him. And now last week, we learn from Ryan that Simon’s girlfriend is the jealous type. Wink, wink.

In the contestant world, however, it’s be straight or be silent. We learn of Phil’s wife and children, Haley fiancé, Kiki’s child, and Chris’ rockin’ grandma. But, of course, no same sex boyfriends or girlfriends. Maybe you’re not allowed to be gay on Idol. Or being out is even more damaging than bad hair or poor song selection.

It’s not like I really care which contestants are gay, as my voting calculus is more based on style than labels. That said, I’d say some – dare I say most – of the male contestants who’ve done well this year have a bit of a gay flavor to them.

So I’m content with last night’s revelation that Blake and Chris are best friends. Chris would even – gasp – be willing to give up his spot to let Blake move on. And hooray for happy endings in the darkest moments, Chris and Blake will be together – if not forever (think Rick Astley) - on the Idol national tour later this year.

Welcome to the post-out world.

p.s. vote for Jordin!

McCain really doesn't like gays

Via ThinkProgress...

I believe polarization of the personnel and breakdown of unit effectiveness is too high a price to pay for well intentioned but misguided efforts to elevate the interests of a minority of homosexual servicemembers above those of their units.

Most importantly, the national security of the United States, not to mention the lives of our men and women in uniform, are put at grave risk by policies detrimental to the good order and and discipline which so distinguish America’s Armed Services. … I remain opposed to the open expression of homosexuality in the military.

Wow. Like there isn't already sex happening in the military, homosexual and heterosexual.

Well, he's on his way to a crushing defeat in the primary. At least that's some consolation.

Ricky Martin flies off the handle

With Christian Chavez's recent coming out as gay, speculators have turned again towards Ricky Martin, who has long been suspected of being a closeted homosexual. I'm not sure what to make of Ricky Martin's most recent splash into the news...a cry for help perhaps? How much farther towards coming out could he go?

Onlookers were shocked when the Latin heart-throb started swearing — peppering his hits with the F-word at the concert at a Connecticut casino.

A US newspaper reported: "The singer shocked the crowd at his concert on Saturday night with sexy video clips showing him in the buff, his private parts barely concealed. He later dropped the F-bomb a couple of times during his onstage patter."

Not sure what US Newspaper this article references, but its pretty hilarious that "dropping the f-bomb' is part of everyday discourse enough to make it into the paper.

Sex in space!

NASA can't bring themselves to admit that sex probably takes place on space flights, and sex in some form will almost certainly take place on a planned flight to Mars. Discussion about sex notably absent from an important document detailing health concerns for the three-year long trip to Mars. An excerpt...
One topic that is evidently too hot to handle: How do you cope with sexual desire among healthy young men and women during a mission years long?

Sex is not mentioned in the document and has long been almost a taboo topic at NASA. Williams said the question of sex in space is not a matter of crew health but a behavioral issue that will have to be taken up by others at NASA.

The agency will have to address the matter sooner or later, said Paul Root Wolpe, a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania who has advised NASA since 2001.

"There is a decision that is going to have to be made about mixed-sex crews, and there is going to be a lot of debate about it," he said.

Ok, whoah. First things first...it's only heterosexual couples that will end up having sex on a 3 year long flight!?!? Yeah, right. We all know that humans adapt in mitigating circumstances... think prison.

Second, sex in space has almost certainly taken place already. You don't think Neil Amstrong, or some other astronaut, took it upon themselves to have some zero-g hanky panky? With the already well-covered story about the love triangle involving NASA, I think it's pretty much agreed-upon that sex happens at NASA. Not so far off to join the 30 mile-high club. Har har.

P.S. If anyone knows where to view the video of Jon Stewart's skewering of the national media during the Astro-nut love triangle story, let me know in the comments and I'll repost here. The segment was called "Very Accomplished Woman in Tragic Local Story."
