Gay Don't Pay on American Idol

Simon says that American Idol is a singing competition. But this year’s most entertaining moments have been the flirtatious bantering between Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell. During the earlier episodes it seemed as though they were in the midst of a good natured tiff – check out this clip:

Later, we had Ryan commenting on Simon’s unbuttoned shirt and standing oh so close behind him. And now last week, we learn from Ryan that Simon’s girlfriend is the jealous type. Wink, wink.

In the contestant world, however, it’s be straight or be silent. We learn of Phil’s wife and children, Haley fiancé, Kiki’s child, and Chris’ rockin’ grandma. But, of course, no same sex boyfriends or girlfriends. Maybe you’re not allowed to be gay on Idol. Or being out is even more damaging than bad hair or poor song selection.

It’s not like I really care which contestants are gay, as my voting calculus is more based on style than labels. That said, I’d say some – dare I say most – of the male contestants who’ve done well this year have a bit of a gay flavor to them.

So I’m content with last night’s revelation that Blake and Chris are best friends. Chris would even – gasp – be willing to give up his spot to let Blake move on. And hooray for happy endings in the darkest moments, Chris and Blake will be together – if not forever (think Rick Astley) - on the Idol national tour later this year.

Welcome to the post-out world.

p.s. vote for Jordin!

  • british guys, in general, are less homophobic than Americans, don't you think? Simon seems to enjoy the bantering and innuendos even though he clearly likes the ladies

  • Oh no...not another Jordin fan!! All I can say about that is, it is always very entertaining. It's along the same lines with Dancing with the Stars, where they have Jimmy Kimmel, host and the drag parking lot attendant in bed together. They can joke about it, but hmmmm....let me see Dancing with the Stars have a same sex couple compete next season? What is that about you have to laugh about the things that make you uncomfortable...? It makes for a good laugh. However, Tuesday's episode I had to turn when the Bushies were on. What the f--- where they doing on American Idol? Some political ploy to get more air time for better approval ratings or something. We should have kept them on and have America vote to have them booted out!!!

  • damn it, i'm confused. On the Family Guy Episode where Brian plays "Never gonna give you up" he says "Now for a song by a gay guy." Is Rick Astley gay? It's hard to imagine he learned those hip movements through straight sex, and he did come out while a lot of gays in music were still closseted. I just don't like to jump to assumptions without proof. I can find nothing on the net, what special knowledge does Family Guy have that the rest of us dont?

  • pandora, maybe that Family Guy episode was just making fun of rick astley. He may not be gay, but maybe the guys at Family Guy like to think so.

  • Well, he has a daughter with Lene Bausager so I'd say he's more than likely not gay. I hope not! Heehee. :)
