oral sex sends youth to slammer

Genarlow Wilson has spent more than two years in prison for having oral sex with a 15-year-old when he was 17. Ironically, if he had had sex with the girl he would be a free man because that act would have fallen under Georgia's "Romeo and Juliet" exception. In general, people are supportive of Wilson and see the tragic absurdity of the case. But not Eric Johnson. The state senator is quoted as saying "This was not two star-crossed lovers on a date." Gives you one more reason to question whether conservatives have the brains to lead.

  • messed up thing about this, is that the same tape that showed the oral sex "also shows Wilson and other male partygoers having sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl. Prosecutors sought a rape conviction against him, arguing that the 17-year-old was semiconscious and not capable of consent." (from AP) but the jurors decided that only the oral sex was prosecution worthy!

    say what!

  • Insanity, of course, that sentence for fellatio bewen the two teenagers, and yet another exemplification of the primary mental instability of this nation: sexual anxiety, sexual obsession, sexual depravity, sexual this, that , the other, ad infinitum. Sex to sell products. Sex to live with. Sex to die for! Sex to make any narrative compelling. Sex to mask the defects.

We're told, and we tell our children, that a person's identity inheres between their legs. Once upon a better time, we were told, and we told our children, that the signifier of a person's identity lies between his/her ears.

And in that better time, no less ardent or lascivious or compulsive about sex than are we today, good manners prescribed and good manners proscribed. And reticence held back, and considered what Shakespeare called "an expense of spirit in a waste of shame." Didn't really inhibit, of course. But it did civilize. It did add the promethian reflection to the ejaculatoy spin. It did induce consideration of the "other" as something more than a "meaty repast."

Now we have "let it all hang out," as it were, and confused blatant blab about this or that erotica with honesty. No modesty. No reticence. No bashfulness. No blushing. None of those personality features that make the thought or anticipation of actual physical intimacy with a person an enchantment.

Now there's all the "enchantment" of a selection at the butcher shop, placing it on the grill, then sinking your teeth into it. Has immediacy, all right. But thin on the finer points of lasting satisfaction. And soon, the next piece of meat resembles the next. Or the last.

It's all nuts. Nothing wrong with being nuts, if that's what one most desires to be. But "nuts" is self-limiting and confining. Inhibits potency of that glorious organ between the ear. Induces that "Is that all there is feeling," the morning after.

    And that's nuts.
